The Educational Foundation for Human Capital - A Dialogue Between Insource and Cadira

This month, we will dive into Insource Co., Ltd. (6200), focusing on its corporate profile and Cadira’s engagement activities.

Company Overview

Insource is a human resource development and training consulting company that holds a top-tier share of the domestic corporate training market in Japan, supporting corporate education infrastructure through the effective use of IT. Beyond simply dispatching instructors to deliver training programs, the company leverages its proprietary IT systems (LMS) to streamline HR operations and visualize human capital. By combining analog “education” with digital “IT,” Insource has established a unique positioning that supports corporate growth.

The company’s history is also a history of proactively anticipating changes in societal needs. Since its founding in 2002 by its current President and Representative Executive Officer, Mr. Takayuki Funahashi, Insource has grown with instructor-dispatch training as its core business. In 2004, it launched its “open seminar” business, which allows participation by as few as one individual, thereby creating a flexible learning environment accessible to organizations of all sizes.

In 2009, Insource was among the first in the industry to launch an IT service (Leaf), moving quickly into the digitalization of education. Since its IPO in 2016, the company has continued to present solutions most needed by organizations at key turning points—such as rapidly shifting to online training during the pandemic and accelerating full-scale development of DX and AI talent.

One of Insource’s key strengths lies in its extensive lineup of over 3,000 training programs and its exceptional speed of content development. All training content is standardized in-house, enabling participants to learn highly reproducible “how-to” methods regardless of instructor, a feature that has earned strong evaluations from corporate clients. From hierarchical training to the latest applications of generative AI and DX promotion, content is continuously updated to reflect the demands of the times.

Another defining feature of Insource is its platform strategy that integrates education and IT. Its learning management system (LMS), Leaf, functions as a comprehensive infrastructure covering everything from training registration and attendance records to e-learning and the accumulation of data required for human capital disclosure. Today, Leaf is used by more than four million users. This IT capability dramatically reduces the operational burden on HR departments and enables more strategic human resource development.

Insource has evolved beyond the role of a traditional training vendor into a platform-based company that can run an end-to-end cycle—visualizing organizational conditions through data, providing actionable knowledge that drives on-site change, and embedding these practices through IT. It has now established a firm position not only in the private sector but also as an indispensable partner supporting human capital management in organizational transformation across government agencies and local municipalities.

Engagement with Insource

At Insource, President Funahashi himself is actively involved in dialogue with investors.

Recently, Cadira invited President Funahashi to participate in and speak at a webinar titled “Rethinking Reskilling.” A total of 11 participants—including sustainability-focused investors and asset owners—joined the session, engaging in lively discussions from a wide range of perspectives.

President Funahashi began by explaining Insource’s strengths as a pioneer of Japan’s corporate training business, the company’s strategic direction, and the broader industry environment surrounding reskilling, helping participants deepen their understanding.

During the discussion, some participants raised concerns that the training business is inherently labor-intensive and may face limitations to long-term growth. In response, the company explained that education is fundamentally a field that can be logically and structurally organized and designed, and that by combining AI and operational systems, there remains significant room for further business expansion.

President Funahashi also highlighted a business opportunity in the fact that many companies treat training merely as knowledge acquisition and fail to link it to corporate value enhancement. He expressed a clear intention to actively expand into “upstream areas” (consulting), going beyond training to address corporate challenges such as issue definition, organizational design, HR systems, and behavioral change. He noted that expanding human resources in these areas could unlock substantial growth potential.

Participants also shared expectations for Insource, including strengthening branding through awareness-raising activities in adult education, and expanding into sectors with high reskilling demand, such as the public sector and healthcare.

In closing, President Funahashi offered insights on AI utilization, noting that Japanese strengths—such as strong writing skills, careful requirements definition, and on-the-ground execution capabilities—are well suited to working with AI, suggesting significant potential for future development.

Following the dialogue, participants expressed concrete requests such as “we would like you to speak with our HR department as well,” making this engagement a particularly meaningful opportunity from a perspective somewhat different from typical investor engagement, with potential to develop into future business collaboration.

Conclusion

Above, we have outlined Insource’s corporate profile and Cadira’s engagement activities with the company.

At Cadira, we view Insource as a company that directly contributes to solving structural challenges facing Japanese society, such as correcting educational disparities and improving labor productivity. The recent strong momentum toward enhanced human capital development represents a powerful tailwind for the company, further elevating the importance of its role. We also note the strengthening of its business model through the expansion of recurring revenue streams and consulting services.

From a performance perspective, with the exception of the anomalous fiscal year ended September 2020 during the pandemic, Insource has sustained high growth of nearly 20% over many years. We will continue to closely monitor the company as it pursues strong economic rationality while simultaneously creating enduring social value.
